University Heights Science Park
An Overview

Although all technology companies are welcome in Science Park, recruiting is focused on four technology clusters, reflecting the research strengths of the sponsoring universities:

  • Biosciences & Biotechnology

  • Information & Communications Technology

  • Environmental & Energy Technology

  • Advanced Manufacturing Technology

The first two Science Park buildings were completed in the Fall of 1996.  Located in the 15,000 square foot CHEN building are the Park's offices and the industrial liaison laboratories for the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials & Medical Devices.  The NJIT Enterprise Development Center II is a 30,000 square foot business incubator that is home to seventeen technology start-up companies, and a 100 child day care center open to Science Park tenants.  It joins NJIT's Enterprise Development Center I, a 50,000 square foot incubator housing 35 technology start-up companies.  Together these incubators make Newark home to the largest and oldest concentration of technology start-up companies in New Jersey.

Science Park is designed as a 50-acre, mixed-use, science and technology park in Newark's Central Ward, adjacent to the Park's four higher education sponsors.  At buildout UHSP will include one million square feet of technology laboratories and offices, 75,000 square feet of technology  incubator space, up to 20,000 square feet of ancillary support retail, an 800 student technology high school, two blocks of new and rehabilitated housing and a day care center. The Plan will generate $350M of construction, 5,000 direct and indirect construction jobs, 6,600 direct and indirect permanent jobs with an annual payroll of $275M, and $4 million of new real estate taxes.

A not-for-profit corporation, UHSP was incorporated in 1992 to implement this comprehensive vision.  In addition to Newark's higher education institutions, the Board of Trustees includes representatives from several community organizations, officials at all government levels, the Newark Public Schools, and private corporations, including PSE&G, The Prudential Insurance Company, First Union National Bank and Bell Atlantic of New Jersey.
